Manufacturing cost analysis of advanced parabolic trough collector

The research team performed a detailed bottom-up manufacturing cost estimate for an advanced parabolic trough design — the Solar Dynamics Sunbeam-MT (Sunbeam Mid-Term). This includes all components and assembly in facility (e.g. space frame arms), purchased parts mirrors receiver tubes). Estimates of construction activities have been made to then determine estimated installed cost. Prior analysis has already undertaken manufacturing, assembly, Ultimate Trough from schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), this work updates solar field estimates based on similar aperture area as SunBeam-MT. For analysis, is considered commercial trough. similarity, both modelled with approximately 800,000 square meters (m2) —the equivalent large CSP plant. found potential could be $120/m2 but must built at scale confirm estimate. Compared prior using U.S. conditions, reduced $178/m2 $152/m2. Both designs even cheaper Chinese steel.
